A private actor leaves an extraordinary cinematic legacy.
Sydney | July 2026
Sam Neill, the acclaimed New Zealand actor known for Jurassic Park, The Piano and Possession, died from pneumonia at the age of 78. His longtime representative disclosed the cause following inaccurate reports surrounding the actor’s sudden death in Sydney.
Neill had previously battled an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Earlier this year, he revealed that he was cancer-free after receiving CAR-T cell therapy, confirming that his death was not caused by the disease.
His family will honor him through a private memorial at his farm in New Zealand, in keeping with his preference for privacy. Neill remained professionally active until recently and completed four productions scheduled for release in the coming months.
Across more than five decades, he moved effortlessly between major Hollywood productions, independent cinema and television. Filmmakers and actors have remembered him not only for his performances, but also for the warmth, humility and generosity he brought to every set.
