The Trump administration is developing a postwar strategy for the Middle East based on three principal objectives, according to unnamed officials cited in US media reports. The proposal remains under discussion and has not been formally published or approved as binding American policy.
The first pillar would create stronger coordination among US partners to deter and contain Iran. Washington could act as the security guarantor for this regional alignment, connecting Israel with Arab governments that share concerns about Tehran’s military capabilities and regional networks. Whether those states would accept an overt alliance involving Israel remains uncertain.
A second axis would address the unresolved consequences of the October 7 attacks and the subsequent Gaza war. Discussions reportedly include implementing another phase of Trump’s Gaza plan and pursuing a security agreement between Israel and Syria. These initiatives would require enforceable arrangements on reconstruction, Palestinian governance, displacement and Israeli military operations.
The third pillar seeks to expand the Abraham Accords, with normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia as the central objective. Riyadh has historically linked diplomatic recognition to progress toward a Palestinian state and stronger American security guarantees. The regional war and domestic public opinion have made that negotiation considerably more difficult.
The plan is likely to be influenced by the upcoming US midterm elections and Israel’s legislative elections. It also depends on ending active hostilities with Iran and persuading regional governments that American guarantees will survive political changes in Washington. For now, the three pillars describe an ambition rather than an agreed settlement. Their success would depend on whether military power can be translated into legitimate and durable political arrangements.
