Oura Faces Lawsuit over the Accuracy of Its Sleep-Tracking Claims

The proposed class action questions whether the company’s smart rings measure sleep stages or generate estimates that consumers may mistake for clinical data.

SAN FRANCISCO.— Oura is facing a proposed class action lawsuit in the United States accusing the company of misleading consumers about the accuracy of its sleep-tracking technology. Filed by Clarkson Law Firm, the complaint challenges claims that the company’s rings can reliably identify sleep quality and different stages of rest. The plaintiffs argue that the devices present algorithmic estimates in a way that may resemble direct physiological measurements.

Clinical sleep studies use polysomnography to record brain activity, eye movements and other biological signals. Oura’s rings instead collect information from the finger, including movement, temperature and cardiovascular indicators, before algorithms estimate whether the wearer is awake or experiencing light, deep or REM sleep. The lawsuit claims those sensors cannot directly observe the processes occurring inside the brain.

The complaint also questions promotional statements describing Oura’s products as offering unprecedented precision. According to the filing, the company previously cited accuracy rates of 79% for certain measurements and later promoted 95% accuracy when comparing sleep-stage classification with laboratory results. The plaintiffs contend that such figures may encourage consumers to consider the rings equivalent to medical sleep-testing equipment.

The legal action seeks compensation for customers and an injunction preventing Oura from continuing marketing claims considered misleading by the plaintiffs. The allegations have not been proven in court, and the lawsuit does not establish that the company committed fraud or that its devices lack all practical value. The case could determine how clearly wearable manufacturers must separate useful health estimates from measurements carrying the authority of clinical science.
