Artificial intelligence enters a new frontier in pharmaceutical research.

Danish pharmaceutical company Novo, formerly Novo Nordisk and known for its diabetes and obesity treatments Ozempic and Wegovy, has announced a collaboration with Anthropic to accelerate the discovery and development of new medicines using artificial intelligence. The agreement, unveiled on September 16, will integrate Anthropic’s Claude models and Claude Science into pharmaceutical research and software development. The companies intend to address specific scientific challenges identified by Novo’s researchers while improving workflows involving biological analysis and computational methods. The partnership reflects the growing importance of artificial intelligence in an industry where developing new medicines remains expensive, complex and time-consuming.
The collaboration will initially focus on testing Claude Science within selected research and development activities. Scientists and computational specialists will work alongside Anthropic to design solutions addressing specific biological questions and improve the interpretation of scientific information. The companies also intend to develop AI-supported software engineering capabilities, potentially reducing the time researchers spend on technical and administrative tasks. These objectives remain development ambitions rather than demonstrated improvements in clinical outcomes or approved treatments.
Novo Chief Executive Mike Doustdar presented the agreement as part of the company’s ambition to become a leading AI-driven healthcare organization. He emphasized that advanced models could improve research productivity while opening new opportunities to investigate human biology and understand how medicines work. Anthropic Chief Executive Dario Amodei offered an ambitious assessment of AI’s potential to accelerate medical breakthroughs, suggesting that advances traditionally requiring decades could eventually occur within substantially shorter periods. Such projections express technological expectations, not established scientific results.
The agreement builds on Novo’s existing investment in artificial intelligence. In April, the company established a collaboration involving OpenAI’s scientific model GPT-Rosalind to analyze complex datasets, identify potential drug candidates and improve research efficiency. Its broader technological ecosystem also includes Denmark’s Gefion supercomputer, developed through a partnership involving the Novo Nordisk Foundation, Nvidia and the country’s Export and Investment Fund. Anthropic, meanwhile, expanded its pharmaceutical presence in May through a collaboration with Bristol Myers Squibb covering research, clinical development, manufacturing and corporate operations.
The scientific implications require careful distinction between computational acceleration and medical validation. AI can assist researchers in evaluating hypotheses and organizing complex information, but promising drug candidates must still undergo experimental investigation, clinical trials and regulatory assessment. Incorrect predictions, biased training data and limitations in biological reasoning could undermine research if outputs are accepted without independent scrutiny. Human scientific judgment therefore remains essential throughout the development process.
The financial terms of the partnership have not been disclosed, and neither company has announced a specific medicine resulting from the collaboration. Its eventual value will depend on measurable improvements in research efficiency, the quality of scientific findings and successful validation in subsequent development stages. The agreement illustrates a broader transformation in pharmaceutical innovation: artificial intelligence is moving from an auxiliary analytical instrument toward integration with the scientific processes through which new treatments are investigated.
