Mamelodi Sundowns have taken another step toward a potential showdown with Paris Saint-Germain after defeating Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli 2-1 in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup on September 19. The South African champions secured the African-Asian-Pacific Cup at Loftus Versfeld Stadium, overcoming a team featuring several internationally recognized players. Portuguese midfielder Nuno Santos scored twice to deliver the victory and extend Sundowns’ participation in the tournament. The result establishes another contender in the competition’s pathway toward the December final, where PSG is already waiting.
Sundowns opened the scoring in the 17th minute through Santos, whose early contribution placed the hosts in control of the encounter. Al Ahli responded quickly, benefiting from an own goal involving goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to restore parity. The Saudi side, featuring England international Ivan Toney, created further opportunities but struggled to translate its attacking possession into a decisive advantage. Santos ultimately settled the contest with a diving header nine minutes before the final whistle.
The victory carries particular significance because Al Ahli entered the competition as Asian champions and had already eliminated Auckland FC of New Zealand in the preliminary round. Sundowns, representing the Confederation of African Football, entered directly into the next stage as the continent’s champions. Their triumph secured a regional trophy while advancing them to the FIFA Challenger Cup. The result ended Al Ahli’s hopes of reaching the Intercontinental Cup final.
However, Sundowns have not yet secured a direct meeting with Paris Saint-Germain. Their next opponent will emerge from the Derby of the Americas, which brings together Mexican club Toluca, winner of the CONCACAF Champions Cup, and the eventual champion of the 2026 Copa Libertadores. South America’s representative will be determined after the Libertadores final scheduled for November 28 in Montevideo. The winner of that encounter will face Sundowns for the right to challenge PSG.
The French club enters the final directly as UEFA Champions League winner, a privilege established under the competition’s format. Luis Enrique’s side will therefore avoid the preliminary rounds while its eventual opponent navigates successive knockout encounters. FIFA has yet to finalize the dates and venue for the remaining three matches, although the concluding phase is scheduled for December. The structure creates a direct competitive pathway connecting champions from different continents.
For Mamelodi Sundowns, the achievement extends beyond defeating an established Saudi opponent. It provides another opportunity for African club football to demonstrate its capabilities against representatives from other confederations on an international stage. Toluca and the eventual South American champion remain potential obstacles, making any prediction about a meeting with PSG premature.
