A new David Bowie collection will reveal ten previously unheard recordings from 1965, offering a rare portrait of the artist before he adopted the name that transformed him into a global cultural icon.
Titled David Bowie: The Shel Talmy Recordings, the 22-track album documents the period when he performed as Davie Jones with The Manish Boys and The Lower Third. The recordings were produced by Shel Talmy, known for his work with The Who and The Kinks.
The collection also features contributions from guitarist Jimmy Page before the formation of Led Zeppelin and pianist Nicky Hopkins. Among the unreleased songs are “I Want Your Love,” “Leave Her to Me,” “I Live in Dreams” and “I Do Believe I Love You.”
Scheduled for release on September 18, the album places Bowie’s formative work within the vibrant British music scene of 1965 rather than measuring it against his later masterpieces. It captures an artist still searching for his identity, shortly before Davie Jones became David Bowie.
