Spain mourns as emergency crews battle the flames.

SAN JAVIER, SPAIN — July 2026. King Felipe VI has expressed his condolences and support for the victims of the devastating wildfire in Los Gallardos, Almería. Speaking during an official ceremony at the San Javier Air Base in Murcia, the monarch conveyed his solidarity with families who lost loved ones and those awaiting news of missing relatives.

Felipe VI observed a minute of silence alongside Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor and Infanta Sofía. He also praised the emergency personnel working to control the fire and assist evacuated communities. The blaze has killed at least 12 people, while 23 remain unaccounted for.

As a gesture of respect, the King canceled his attendance at a reception scheduled after the military ceremony marking the completion of Princess Leonor’s training. The Royal Family also withdrew from the traditional celebratory toast. The adjustments reflected the gravity of one of Spain’s deadliest recent wildfires.

Felipe VI later contacted Andalusian regional president Juan Manuel Moreno to express his concern about the fire’s evolution and reiterate his condolences. Moreno described the monarch as deeply worried and devastated by the scale of the tragedy. National and regional leaders have also issued messages of support.

A major emergency operation remains active across Almería as crews confront difficult terrain and rapidly changing conditions. Authorities continue searching for missing people while assisting more than 1,000 residents forced to evacuate.

As the flames continue, Spain’s attention remains fixed on the victims and those still missing.
