Coco Gauff Overpowers Iva Jovic to Reach US Open Quarterfinals

A controlled performance moves the American closer to another title in New York.

NEW YORK, UNITED STATES

Coco Gauff advanced to the US Open quarterfinals with a commanding 6-1, 6-4 victory over fellow American Iva Jovic at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The fourth seed required only two sets to overcome the 18-year-old, producing her most complete performance of the tournament and preserving her record of not losing a set in New York.

The opening set began with an exchange of service breaks, but Gauff quickly established control through depth, speed and disciplined defense. She repeatedly forced Jovic to play additional shots and converted the resulting errors into decisive momentum. The former champion completed the match with 18 winners and 15 unforced errors, while Jovic produced nine winners and 30 mistakes.

Jovic responded more effectively during the second set and attempted to dictate rallies earlier, but Gauff absorbed her pace and remained composed during the important points. A demanding 24-shot exchange illustrated the difference between them: Jovic attacked repeatedly, yet Gauff’s movement and defensive reach eventually transformed the point in her favor.

The result continues an impressive North American hard-court run for Gauff, who arrived at the US Open after winning the Cincinnati title. The 2023 New York champion is pursuing the third Grand Slam trophy of her career and has developed a more adaptable game, allowing her to change tactics when her serve or aggression becomes unreliable.

Gauff will face fifth-seeded Mirra Andreeva in the quarterfinals. The Russian won the 2026 French Open, while Gauff captured the title at Roland Garros a year earlier. Gauff leads their head-to-head series 5-0, although Andreeva’s recent development and ability to redirect pace make the next meeting considerably more demanding than that record suggests.

Jovic leaves the tournament after another important step in her rapid ascent. Reaching the fourth round confirmed her position among the most promising players of her generation, but Gauff demonstrated the difference between emerging potential and the consistency required to contend for major championships.

Talent creates opportunity, but composure determines how far it travels.
