Rafael Nadal Defends His Spanish Tax Record as Business Empire Expands

The tennis legend says paying millions was part of his responsibility as a citizen.

MANACOR, SPAIN

Rafael Nadal has reaffirmed his commitment to paying taxes in Spain, declaring that he has contributed “many millions” throughout a career that produced extraordinary sporting and commercial income. The retired tennis champion has consistently maintained his personal tax residence in Mallorca, despite the international mobility available to elite athletes.

The remarks resurfaced from interviews in which Nadal acknowledged that receiving a tax bill was never pleasant but presented taxation as part of the social contract. He argued that Spain had provided the conditions for a successful life and that meeting his obligations was therefore his responsibility as a citizen. His earnings extended far beyond the approximately $135 million accumulated in official tennis prize money, including sponsorships, image rights and investments.

Nadal’s tax history nevertheless attracted scrutiny in 2012. Several companies connected with him had been registered in Gipuzkoa between 2006 and 2011 under a favorable regional corporate regime, although their management and principal activities reportedly took place elsewhere. Following an investigation and an agreement with tax authorities, the companies transferred their fiscal address to Manacor and underwent a multimillion-euro regularization.

His representatives maintained that the corporate arrangements had complied with the applicable rules and that Nadal personally had never moved his tax residence outside Spain. They also stated that both the former player and his companies were current on their obligations. The renewed coverage does not identify a new tax investigation, unpaid assessment or judicial proceeding against him.

Since retiring from professional tennis in 2024, Nadal has expanded an increasingly diversified business portfolio. His interests include the Rafa Nadal Academy, international training centers, real-estate developments, the ZEL hotel brand created with Meliá and other investments. That transformation makes the governance of his corporate network more relevant, because public credibility established through sport must now coexist with the greater financial complexity of a multinational business operation.

Transparency becomes more important as success becomes more complex.
