The Thai driver’s renewal provides stability for Williams while uncertainty grows around the rest of the 2027 driver market.
GROVE, UNITED KINGDOM | 18 AUGUST 2026
Williams has officially extended Alex Albon’s contract through the end of the 2027 Formula 1 season. The one-year agreement secures the future of the 30-year-old driver, whose previous deal was due to expire after the current campaign. Albon will therefore compete in a sixth consecutive season with the British team.
The Thai driver joined Williams in 2022 after racing for Toro Rosso and Red Bull. He recently completed his 100th Grand Prix with the Grove-based team, surpassing Nigel Mansell’s 95 starts for Williams. His continuity reinforces his position as one of the central figures in the team’s long-term reconstruction.
The renewal comes despite a difficult 2026 season for Williams, which sits ninth among the championship’s 11 teams after the opening 11 races. Albon has contributed five of the team’s 11 points, while teammate Carlos Sainz has scored six. The Thai driver said that one challenging year does not define the project and expressed his determination to help move Williams back up the grid.
Albon’s confirmation also adds another fixed piece to the emerging 2027 driver market. Sainz has not yet agreed to an extension, leaving uncertainty over whether Williams will retain its current pairing beyond this season. For the team, securing Albon provides technical continuity, leadership and a trusted reference point as it attempts to convert its institutional transformation into stronger competitive results.
