The revised power unit will make its competitive debut at Zandvoort after Honda achieved its internal development target.
SAKURA, JAPAN | 18 AUGUST 2026
Honda believes its upgraded Formula 1 engine can deliver a significant step forward for Aston Martin during the Dutch Grand Prix. The new specification will be introduced at Zandvoort as the championship resumes after its summer break. It represents the Japanese manufacturer’s first major power-unit update under the 2026 regulations.
Honda has focused on improving combustion efficiency through changes to the pre-chamber and piston design. Engineers have also revised the lubrication system to reduce internal friction and strengthen reliability. Chief engineer Shintaro Orihara confirmed that the development programme reached Honda’s internal horsepower target, although the manufacturer has not disclosed the expected power increase.
The revised engine was tested alongside Aston Martin’s updated AMR26B during a filming day at the Hungaroring, with reserve driver Jack Crawford completing the initial running. The team had already introduced an extensive chassis and aerodynamic package at the Hungarian Grand Prix. Combining both developments could provide Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll with a more competitive platform during the second half of the season.
Expectations nevertheless remain cautious after reliability problems and damaging vibrations affected the opening months of the Honda–Aston Martin partnership. Zandvoort will provide the first competitive indication, while the high-speed demands of Monza may offer a clearer assessment of the engine’s true progress. The central question is whether engineering improvements measured in the factory can now be converted into meaningful performance on the track.
