Independent Publishers Fair Returns With Record-Breaking Fifteenth Edition

by Phoenix 24

Books, awards and international exchange will converge in Buenos Aires.

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA — June 2026. The Independent Publishers Fair will celebrate its fifteenth edition from August 6 to 9 at C Art Media, bringing together more than 330 publishing houses from Latin America and Spain. Admission will be free with prior registration, and organisers expect another major turnout after approximately 30,800 people attended in 2025.

Publishers from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and Spain will participate in the event. The gathering has become an important meeting point for readers, editors, booksellers, translators and other professionals connected to independent publishing.

The fair began in 2013 with only 15 small publishing houses and has since grown into one of the most important literary events of its kind in the region. Its expansion reflects the increasing visibility of publishers that promote new authors, unconventional catalogues and genres with limited space in large commercial circuits.

One of the central features of the 2026 edition will be the free book distributed to visitors, which will focus on the theme of work. More than 500 applications were submitted, and the ten selected texts will each receive 200,000 Argentine pesos following an evaluation led by author and editor Ricardo Romero.

The official visual identity was created by illustrator Ornella Pagliaruolo, winner of the FED 2026 Poster Award. The recognition includes 900,000 pesos and professional art materials.

Bookstores and libraries will receive special access on August 6 and 7 before the fair opens to the general public. Participating publishers will offer a 50% discount for cash purchases during those hours, while bookstores outside Buenos Aires will receive free shipping for orders of up to 200 kilograms.

The online bookstore Medio pan y un libro was selected as the fair’s official digital retailer. It will offer free nationwide delivery and a copy of the event’s complimentary publication for purchases exceeding 60,000 pesos.

Awards and professional support programmes will also occupy a central place in the schedule. The sixth Bookselling Achievement Award will recognise one of five finalists from Buenos Aires, Mar del Plata, Bariloche and Córdoba.

The winner will receive four million pesos to purchase books during the fair, together with additional discounts from participating publishers. The initiative seeks to strengthen independent bookstores and support their role within the publishing ecosystem.

The National Arts Fund and the fair selected Funga, from Santiago del Estero, and Las Guachas de la Patagonia to receive one million pesos each. The support will cover travel, accommodation and operating expenses, while also providing both projects with stands at the event.

The professional programme will include meetings between publishers and audiovisual producers through the Carthago initiative. It will also feature an online event for foreign translators interested in Argentine literature and the fifth edition of the Fellowship programme.

That initiative will connect European editors with representatives of the Argentine publishing industry. The goal is to expand international circulation, strengthen translation opportunities and promote new commercial agreements.

The cultural programme will extend beyond books and publishing. A blood donation station operated by the Buenos Aires Hemocenter will function on August 7 to raise awareness about the country’s low donation rate.

Donors will be entered into a draw for tickets to the FED Party, scheduled for August 8 at Teatro Vorterix. DJ and producer Villa Diamante and the musical project Sandwich Piano Bar will perform during the celebration.

The fair will also continue its training programme for publishing professionals through paid seminars. Topics will include contracts, book titles, cover design, digital communities, distribution in Latin America and editorial identity.

With its combination of literary discovery, professional exchange, economic support and public celebration, the fifteenth edition will reinforce the role of independent publishing within the Spanish-language cultural landscape. It will also demonstrate how small and medium-sized publishers continue building audiences, opening international markets and sustaining literary diversity.

Independent publishing grows when books, readers and communities meet.
