Flydubai Flight to Tel Aviv Diverts After Cockpit Stabbing and Dramatic Midair Plunge

by Phoenix 24

A violent cockpit struggle turned a routine flight into an international security emergency.

Tabuk

A Flydubai flight traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia after a violent confrontation inside the cockpit left both pilots injured and sent the aircraft into a sudden descent of thousands of meters. Israeli authorities initially described the incident as a possible jihadist attack, although the motive remains under investigation and has not been independently established.

Flight FZ1073 was carrying 174 people, including 166 Israelis, when the emergency unfolded approximately two and a half hours after departure. Flight tracking data showed the Boeing 737 descending from about 33,000 feet to approximately 17,000 feet within seconds before entering an irregular flight pattern near Jordan. The aircraft first transmitted a general emergency code and subsequently a code indicating possible unlawful interference.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said one pilot stabbed the other and then attempted to interfere with the aircraft’s controls. According to his account, passengers and crew members entered the cockpit, subdued the alleged attacker and helped stabilize the aircraft. Other reports indicated that off duty pilots traveling as passengers may also have assisted before the plane landed safely at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Airport in Tabuk.

Israel’s Defense Minister Israel Katz initially characterized the event as an attempted jihadist attack. However, investigators have not yet publicly established terrorism as the motive. Saudi authorities detained the suspected attacker for questioning, while Flydubai said it was cooperating with the relevant authorities and emphasized that all passengers had survived.

The incident triggered an immediate security response in Israel. Fighter aircraft were mobilized amid early concerns that the plane might have been hijacked, while senior officials held emergency consultations. Israel’s transport authorities also called for a review of Flydubai operations and aviation security procedures associated with the route.

The Dubai Tel Aviv connection carries additional geopolitical significance because it emerged after the United Arab Emirates and Israel normalized relations through the Abraham Accords in 2020. Commercial aviation became one of the most visible symbols of that new relationship.

The investigation must now determine what caused the confrontation, how a knife entered the cockpit environment and whether the alleged attempt to interfere with the aircraft was politically motivated, personally driven or connected to another factor.

The passengers survived because the aircraft ultimately remained under control. The unanswered questions now concern how close the flight came to catastrophe and what the incident reveals about vulnerabilities inside modern commercial aviation.
