Wall Street Rebounds but Fails to Erase a Volatile Week’s Losses

Friday’s advance offered investors temporary relief as bond-market pressure, geopolitical risk and technology-sector weakness continued to shape sentiment.

NEW YORK — Wall Street’s principal indexes closed higher on Friday, although the rebound was insufficient to reverse losses accumulated during a turbulent week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 0.98% to 53,277.01, while the S&P 500 gained 0.43% to finish at 7,674.37. The Nasdaq Composite also advanced 0.43%, closing at 26,180.45.

Despite the positive session, the S&P 500 ended the week 1.43% lower and interrupted a three-week winning streak. The Nasdaq declined 2.05%, pressured by weakness in technology and semiconductor stocks, while the Dow registered a second consecutive weekly loss after falling 0.85%. Small-cap equities also advanced on Friday but remained negative for the week.

Investor caution was driven by volatile US Treasury yields and continuing uncertainty surrounding Iran and the wider Middle East. Oil prices extended their advance for a sixth session as markets assessed possible sanctions and risks to global energy supplies. Stronger activity in the US services sector supported Friday’s recovery, although manufacturing continued to face supply disruptions.

Retail and cryptocurrency-related companies were among the session’s strongest performers, helped by favorable earnings and Bitcoin’s sharp rebound. Investors are now preparing for results from Nvidia and other major technology companies, alongside new inflation data and Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s appearance at Jackson Hole. Friday restored some confidence, but the weekly losses showed that Wall Street remains highly exposed to every movement in bonds, oil and geopolitical risk.
