Becky G Embraces Sexuality and Identity on Baraja Bendita

Her fifth studio album reunites the artist’s sensuality, Mexican-American heritage and early passion for rap under a new sense of creative control.

LOS ANGELES — Becky G has spoken openly about expressing her sexuality and challenging the restrictions often imposed on Latina women in entertainment. In an interview with Playboy, the 29-year-old singer questioned why female sensuality is celebrated privately but criticized when women describe it publicly. She said her new music reflects her own experiences rather than speaking about womanhood only in general terms.

Released on August 14, Baraja Bendita marks a more liberated chapter following the introspection of Esquinas and Encuentros. The album combines house music, Latin rhythms and electronic elements while restoring rap to a central place in her sound. Becky G explained that she had stepped away from rapping because of industry pressure, not because she had lost interest in the genre.

The title, translated as “Blessed Deck of Cards,” represents how she transformed the opportunities and challenges she received throughout her career. After beginning work at nine years old, she now sees success as something earned through persistence rather than beginner’s luck. Greater control over her career has also allowed her to create music that represents every part of her personality.

Becky G also reflected on the relationship between her public persona and Rebbeca Marie Gomez, her identity outside the stage. She described Becky G as the character she needed during childhood and now regards both identities as inseparable. With Baraja Bendita, she is no longer choosing between vulnerability, sensuality and cultural identity—she is claiming all of them as sources of artistic power.
