US President Donald Trump has announced significant progress toward establishing a permanent American military base in Poland, signaling a potential expansion of Washington’s defense commitments along NATO’s eastern flank. In a statement published on September 17, Trump credited Polish President Karol Nawrocki with advancing negotiations and described the prospective facility as a historic development in bilateral relations. He indicated that its location could be announced soon if the project moves forward. The announcement comes amid continuing security concerns in Eastern Europe and uncertainty over the future distribution of American military resources across the continent.
The United States already maintains approximately 10,000 troops in Poland on rotational deployments, supported by 11 military installations. The headquarters of US Army Garrison Poland is located in Poznań, providing an established framework for American operations and logistical coordination. A permanent base would represent a change in the institutional nature of this military presence rather than the beginning of American deployment in the country. However, Washington has not announced a final agreement, construction schedule or additional troop commitment associated with the proposed facility.

Financial cooperation has also expanded. In September, the US State Department announced $4 billion in military assistance for Poland, reinforcing the broader framework of bilateral defense cooperation. Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz welcomed Trump’s latest statement and emphasized the importance of establishing a permanent American installation. He also credited cooperation between the two presidents with advancing the strategic relationship.
The proposed base carries significance for NATO’s eastern security arrangements. Poland borders Ukraine, Belarus and Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave, placing it near several areas of heightened military concern. A permanent American facility could provide a more stable framework for military planning, infrastructure investment and operational coordination, although its actual capabilities would depend on the final agreement.
