The White Lotus Season 4 Expands Its World on the French Riviera

The luxury satire is becoming larger, longer and more ambitious.

Cannes, France

The fourth season of The White Lotus is shaping up to be the series’ most expansive production yet, with filming underway in southern France and a cast living together for months inside the same hotels used for production. Kumail Nanjiani, one of the new additions to the HBO anthology, has described the experience as unusually immersive, with cast members spending breakfast, lunch and dinner together while working through an extended shoot. The production began in April and is expected to continue for roughly eight months. That duration marks a significant increase from previous seasons and signals a broader scale for Mike White’s latest chapter.

Nanjiani has compared the atmosphere behind the scenes to living in a college dorm, with actors frequently crossing paths outside working hours and developing unusually close relationships. He said the cast has become deeply connected during production, something he considers one of the strongest professional experiences of his career. The shared living environment also preserves one of the distinctive features of The White Lotus production model, where performers remain immersed in the same spaces that define the fictional world. That physical proximity appears to be reinforcing both the social chemistry and the intensity of the shoot.

The new season will unfold in the south of France during the Cannes Film Festival, giving the series access to a setting already associated with wealth, image, competition and celebrity culture. Some sequences reportedly involve between 300 and 400 extras, underscoring the larger production scale. Filming locations include luxury properties in Cannes and Saint Tropez, while the narrative will once again follow guests and employees whose relationships gradually expose conflict beneath an atmosphere of privilege. Creator Mike White remains both writer and director.

The ensemble includes Laura Dern, Steve Coogan, Heather Graham, Vincent Cassel, Max Greenfield, Chloe Bennet, AJ Michalka, Ari Graynor, Alexander Ludwig, Sandra Bernhard, Max Minghella and Rosie Perez, alongside Nanjiani. Despite revealing details about the production environment, Nanjiani has remained silent about the season’s central mystery. He has acknowledged knowing the major narrative secret but says he has not shared it even with his wife. That secrecy preserves one of the franchise’s defining mechanisms: the gradual revelation of a death around which each season is structured.

Season 4 therefore appears designed to expand The White Lotus without abandoning its original formula. What began as a relatively contained production during pandemic restrictions has evolved into a global prestige series capable of mounting increasingly complex shoots. The French Riviera offers a natural extension of that transformation, combining luxury, spectacle and social tension within one of Europe’s most recognizable cultural environments. For HBO, the challenge will be maintaining the intimate psychological tension of the series while operating on its largest canvas so far.
