Smart Glasses Can Capture Bank PINs and Turn Everyday Encounters Into Surveillance

Their discreet cameras and artificial intelligence offer practical benefits, but they can also record financial information, private conversations and identifiable faces without meaningful consent.

San Francisco, California, August 14, 2026.— Smart glasses are becoming increasingly capable of taking photographs, recording video, processing voice commands and analyzing the wearer’s surroundings. Their ordinary appearance, however, makes it difficult for other people to know when those functions are active.

One emerging threat is digital “shoulder surfing.” A malicious wearer could record someone entering a PIN at an ATM, payment terminal or smartphone and later review the footage frame by frame to recover the numbers.

The same method could expose passwords, card details, confidential documents or messages displayed on nearby screens. Unlike traditional surveillance cameras, glasses move naturally with the wearer’s head and can remain close to a target without attracting attention.

Covert recording creates an even broader privacy problem in workplaces, schools, hospitals, gyms, courtrooms, bathrooms and private homes. People may reveal sensitive information without realizing that audio or video is being captured.

Manufacturers commonly include a visible LED to indicate when the camera is operating. Critics argue that the signal can be overlooked, misunderstood or intentionally obstructed. Meta introduced an update that disables the camera on compatible glasses if the recording light is covered, damaged or manipulated.

Artificial intelligence increases the potential consequences. Facial-recognition systems can connect an image of a stranger to names, social-media accounts, addresses and other publicly available information, making stalking, harassment or identity profiling easier.

Cloud processing introduces another layer of exposure. Recordings uploaded for storage, transcription or AI analysis could be accessed through a compromised account, inappropriate sharing settings, external review processes or a security breach.

Individuals can reduce financial risks by shielding keypads and screens, avoiding the entry of sensitive information near unknown recording devices and monitoring bank activity. Organizations should establish clear rules requiring smart glasses to be removed in confidential or restricted environments.

Owners should keep the device updated, activate strong account protection, review application permissions and obtain consent before recording. Indicator lights and company policies are useful safeguards, but neither replaces responsible behavior or effective privacy legislation.

The future is already here.
