The voices behind global hits receive renewed recognition.
NEW YORK
Shakira, Lady Gaga, Jack White and Boy George are among the prominent artists nominated for induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2027, joining an international selection of musicians whose creative contributions have influenced popular music across generations. The newly announced ballot places songwriting at the center of recognition, highlighting the artistic work behind songs that have shaped global culture.
The organization has selected 26 candidates and songwriting teams across two categories: performing songwriters and non-performing songwriters. Only six will be inducted through the regular voting process, with three positions available in each category.
The performing-songwriter nominations include Pink, Sia, Ne-Yo, Vince Gill, Grandmaster Melle Mel and Jack White, alongside Debbie Harry and Chris Stein of Blondie, members of America, ZZ Top and the influential funk group War.

Shakira’s nomination underscores the international reach of Latin American music. The Colombian singer-songwriter has built a multilingual career combining Latin pop, rock and other musical influences, with compositions such as “Hips Don’t Lie,” “Whenever, Wherever,” “La Tortura” and “Inevitable” contributing to her worldwide recognition.
Lady Gaga represents a different creative trajectory, combining provocative pop experimentation with emotionally expressive songwriting. Her nominated catalog includes “Poker Face,” “Bad Romance,” “Born This Way,” “Shallow” and “Die With a Smile,” illustrating the range of her work across dance music and cinematic ballads.
The nominations also recognize creators whose names may be less familiar than the recordings they helped produce. Kandi Burruss, associated with TLC’s “No Scrubs” and Destiny’s Child’s “Bills, Bills, Bills,” is competing in the non-performing songwriter category.
Other candidates include Andreas Carlsson, whose credits feature major recordings by Backstreet Boys and NSYNC, and the Norwegian production duo Stargate, responsible for compositions recorded by Beyoncé, Rihanna and other international performers.
The ballot also features George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, whose songwriting contributions include Whitney Houston classics, alongside Pete Bellotte, Maurice Starr, Dan Wilson, Toni Wine and the British production team Stock Aitken Waterman.
The distinction between the categories recognizes that songwriting extends beyond artists performing their own material. Composers and lyricists who create music for other performers contribute significantly to popular culture, even when their identities remain largely unknown to audiences.

Established in 1969, the Songwriters Hall of Fame requires candidates to possess a notable catalog and to have reached at least 20 years since the first commercial release of one of their songs.
Eligible members can vote for up to three nominees in each category until December 14, with the successful candidates expected to be announced in early 2027.
The selection follows a 2026 induction class that included Taylor Swift, Alanis Morissette, Kenny Loggins and members of Kiss, reflecting the institution’s continuing recognition of diverse musical traditions.
For the nominees, the distinction goes beyond commercial sales, chart positions or concert attendance. It recognizes the creative foundations of songs that remain culturally relevant long after their initial release.
The 2027 nominations ultimately reinforce a fundamental dimension of the music industry: performers bring songs to audiences, but songwriting gives those performances their enduring identity.
