Three filmed scenes disappeared along with an entire Spider-Man future.

Shailene Woodley has recalled the disappointment of learning that all her scenes as Mary Jane Watson had been removed from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Speaking during a career retrospective organized by the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, the actress explained that playing the iconic character had been a personal dream because Spider-Man was her favorite superhero and Mary Jane had fascinated her since childhood.
Woodley filmed approximately three scenes with Andrew Garfield, who portrayed Peter Parker in Sony’s superhero franchise. She believed the role would introduce her character before Mary Jane became more important in a planned third installment. About a year after filming, however, the actress received a call informing her that she would no longer appear in the completed movie.
The filmmakers concluded that the sequel already contained too many new characters and that introducing Peter’s next romantic interest would weaken the emotional impact of Gwen Stacy’s story. Emma Stone’s character dies near the end of the film, leaving Peter devastated. Director Marc Webb therefore chose to concentrate on Peter and Gwen’s relationship and postpone Mary Jane’s arrival until The Amazing Spider-Man 3.
Woodley said she understood the creative reasoning, even though the decision initially crushed her. The proposed third film was ultimately abandoned after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 received a divided critical response and Sony restructured the franchise through an agreement with Marvel Studios. Tom Holland subsequently became the new cinematic Spider-Man, while Garfield’s version eventually returned in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The deleted performance has become one of the franchise’s most intriguing unrealized possibilities. Woodley never had an opportunity to develop her interpretation of Mary Jane, and the scenes she filmed were not included in the theatrical release. Her experience demonstrates how an actor can secure a coveted role, complete the work and still disappear from the final story because of decisions made far beyond the set.
