Russian Drone Strike Hits Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv
The war is reaching deeper into Ukraine’s scientific and civilian infrastructure.

A Russian drone struck the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in central Kyiv as Moscow launched another wave of attacks across the country. Ukrainian emergency authorities reported at least one person killed and several injured at the academy, while the broader series of strikes left at least seven people dead nationwide and dozens wounded. The attack caused a major fire inside the historic building as rescue teams searched the damaged structure. The strike placed one of Ukraine’s most prominent scientific institutions directly inside the expanding geography of the war.
The attack occurred during daylight hours, increasing the danger to people working inside the institution. Ukrainian officials said a jet powered drone directly hit the building, while images from the scene showed flames and heavy damage as firefighters worked among debris. Representatives of the academy emphasized that the institution serves scientific and academic purposes rather than military functions. Russian authorities had not publicly presented evidence establishing a military use of the facility when the attack was reported.
Kyiv was not the only target. Additional strikes hit the wider capital region and other Ukrainian cities, including Dnipro, where casualties were also reported. The attacks formed part of a broader Russian campaign increasingly reliant on drones and missiles capable of reaching infrastructure far beyond the immediate front lines. That pattern continues to stretch the definition of the battlefield across civilian, industrial and institutional spaces.
The destruction of a scientific institution carries significance beyond the physical damage itself. Universities, laboratories and research organizations preserve human capital accumulated over decades and support a country’s technological, educational and economic development. Damage to these institutions therefore affects not only present operations but also the capacity to train researchers, preserve knowledge and sustain future innovation.
The attack also comes as both Russia and Ukraine continue striking infrastructure deep inside each other’s territory. Ukraine has targeted Russian defense production and energy facilities, while Moscow has repeatedly attacked Ukrainian energy, transport and urban infrastructure. Long range warfare has consequently become one of the defining characteristics of the conflict.
The strike on the National Academy of Sciences illustrates how war increasingly reaches institutions once considered far removed from conventional battlefields. Scientific infrastructure, communications systems, energy networks and civilian workplaces now occupy the same strategic environment as military targets.
