A preseason match ended in sudden tragedy.
MALVEIRA, PORTUGAL
Portuguese footballer Quévin Castro died at the age of 25 after collapsing during a preseason friendly between Real Sport Clube and Estrela da Amadora. The midfielder fell to the ground approximately ten minutes after the match began at Estádio das Seixas in Malveira. Medical personnel from the clubs immediately attended to him and reportedly used a defibrillator before emergency services transported him to a hospital. His death was confirmed shortly afterward, and the match was suspended.
Real Sport Clube described Castro as much more than a player and remembered him as a valued member of its family who had made an impact both on and off the field. The Lisbon Football Association also expressed its condolences to his relatives, friends, teammates and club. Estrela da Amadora joined the tributes after the incident, which has shaken football communities in Portugal and England. Authorities and the club have not publicly confirmed the medical cause of his collapse, making any attribution to a particular condition premature.
Born in Portugal and raised in Thetford, Norfolk, Castro developed much of his career within English football. He joined West Bromwich Albion in 2021 and made two senior appearances, including an EFL Cup match against Arsenal. He later represented clubs including Burton Albion, Notts County, Gateshead, York City, King’s Lynn Town, Chippenham Town and Cambridge City. Known as an energetic and physically powerful midfielder, he had recently returned to Portugal to continue his career with Real Sport Clube.
West Bromwich Albion honored its former player during its match against Burnley, with players wearing black armbands and supporters participating in applause during the 25th minute. Similar messages from former clubs, teammates and supporters reflected the number of communities Castro had joined during his relatively short career. His death also renewed attention to the importance of immediate medical intervention, accessible defibrillators and trained emergency personnel at every level of organized football. Those measures can improve survival in some cardiac emergencies, although they cannot prevent every fatal outcome and do not establish what caused this particular incident. For now, the priority remains respecting Castro’s family and allowing medical authorities to determine what happened without speculation.
