Portugal Expects Sharp Fuel Price Drop After Weeks of Volatility

Relief arrives, but uncertainty remains at the pump.

Lisbon, August 2026

Drivers in Portugal are expected to see a substantial reduction in fuel prices beginning next week, with both diesel and petrol retreating after months of volatility linked to the war with Iran. Forecasts indicate that the average price of regular diesel could fall to 1.931 euros per liter. The average price of 95-octane unleaded petrol is projected to decline to 1.855 euros per liter. The reductions would provide immediate relief to households and businesses facing elevated transportation and operating costs.

On Friday, regular diesel was selling at an average of 2.051 euros per liter, while petrol stood at approximately 1.980 euros. If the projections are confirmed, diesel would decline by 12 euro cents per liter and petrol by 12.5 cents. For a driver filling a 50-liter tank, that would represent a saving of approximately six euros on diesel and 6.25 euros on petrol. The financial impact would be greater for transportation companies and other businesses purchasing fuel in large volumes.

The estimates were released using information from the Automóvel Clube de Portugal and average prices published by the Directorate-General for Energy and Geology. These calculations are based on fuel station reports weighted according to the quantities sold during the latest available period. They also incorporate discounts applied at service stations, including fleet cards and other commercial programs. Final prices paid by consumers can vary because Portugal’s fuel retail market is liberalized and individual stations establish their own pricing policies.

The projections remain subject to changes in international crude oil and refined fuel markets before the end of the week. The Automóvel Clube de Portugal noted that its forecast was calculated using market prices recorded at Thursday’s close. Any significant movement in crude oil, exchange rates or wholesale fuel costs could alter the final figures applied from Monday. Regional differences, transportation expenses and competition between stations may also produce variations across the country.

Portugal has experienced pronounced fuel price fluctuations since the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran disrupted energy markets. Restrictions affecting the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of global oil and natural gas supplies normally pass, generated uncertainty over the availability and cost of energy products. Crude oil prices rose sharply during periods of military escalation and eased when diplomatic negotiations appeared more likely. These movements were eventually transmitted to European refineries, distributors and retail stations.

The cost of fuel in Portugal depends on more than the international price of crude oil. Refining margins, transportation expenses, the euro-dollar exchange rate and domestic taxation all influence the amount paid by motorists. Even when crude prices decline, petrol and diesel may remain expensive if refining capacity is constrained or wholesale margins stay elevated. Recent disruptions affecting fuel exports from the Middle East and Russia have added another layer of pressure to European energy markets.

The Portuguese government has used temporary adjustments to the Tax on Petroleum and Energy Products to limit sudden increases at service stations. Authorities previously pledged to apply an extraordinary reduction whenever fuel prices increased by more than 10 cents per liter. As market prices fall, the government may revise the existing tax discount, potentially offsetting part of the expected reduction. The final price presented to consumers will therefore reflect both international market movements and any fiscal adjustment adopted by the government.

Lower fuel prices can have effects extending beyond private vehicle use. Diesel is a major expense for freight transport, agriculture, fishing, construction and public mobility services. A sustained reduction can lower distribution costs and reduce some of the pressure on food, retail and industrial prices. However, the benefit depends on how long the decrease lasts and whether businesses transfer lower operating costs to consumers.

Portuguese households have faced higher expenses for mobility and essential goods throughout the energy crisis. Fuel prices influence daily commuting, family travel and the cost of products transported across the country. The expected decline arrives during the summer season, when road traffic increases because of domestic tourism and the arrival of Portuguese residents returning from abroad. Lower prices could therefore provide timely relief during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

The forecast also illustrates how quickly geopolitical developments can affect personal finances far from the territory where a conflict is taking place. A disruption in a strategic maritime corridor can raise crude prices, increase refinery costs and ultimately change what motorists pay at a neighborhood service station. The predicted decline in Portugal offers a temporary reversal of that chain. Its durability will depend on energy markets, government tax policy and the continuing security of global oil routes.
