Nicole Kidman has offered a rare reflection on her marriage to Tom Cruise, admitting that she was prepared to sacrifice her emerging acting career because she was deeply in love with the Hollywood star.
Speaking in a new interview with British Vogue, the 59-year-old actress recalled being warned that marrying one of the world’s most famous actors could undermine her professional identity. Kidman, however, said such concerns felt irrelevant at the time.
The Australian actress was still in her early twenties when she met Cruise while filming the 1990 action drama Days of Thunder. Their relationship developed rapidly, and they married on Christmas Eve that same year.
For Kidman, the decision did not feel calculated or strategically connected to Hollywood. She described it as completely natural, explaining that the couple had fallen “madly in love” and that marriage was simply what she wanted.
Her advisers feared she would become known primarily as Cruise’s wife rather than as an actress in her own right. Kidman remembered rejecting those predictions because her personal life mattered more to her than protecting a carefully designed career path.
The marriage placed her inside an extraordinary level of fame and scrutiny. Cruise was already an international box-office phenomenon following films such as Top Gun, Rain Man and Born on the Fourth of July, while Kidman was only beginning to establish herself beyond Australia.
They subsequently appeared together in Far and Away and Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut. During their marriage, they also adopted two children, Isabella and Connor.
