The franchise is turning its family history into its next major romance.
Los Angeles, United States
Netflix is expanding the Bridgerton universe with a new limited series centered on the youth of Lady Violet Bridgerton and her relationship with Edmund Bridgerton. The still-untitled project will explore the romance that eventually produced the family at the center of one of the platform’s most successful period dramas.
The series will follow a younger Violet before she became the matriarch familiar to audiences and will focus on her courtship with Edmund, the future viscount and father of the eight Bridgerton siblings. Their relationship has long shaped Violet’s view of marriage, particularly her belief that love should play a central role in choosing a partner.
Shonda Rhimes will co-write, serve as showrunner and executive produce the new project alongside Nicholas Nardini. The creative team will therefore remain closely connected to the broader identity of the franchise. Rhimes previously expanded the same fictional world with Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, which demonstrated that characters outside the central sibling structure could sustain their own successful narratives.
The announcement arrives while production continues on the fifth season of Bridgerton, expected in 2027. That installment will focus on Francesca Stirling and Michaela Stirling, while a sixth season has also been confirmed. The new Violet series therefore represents another stage in Netflix’s strategy of transforming Bridgerton from a linear adaptation into a broader narrative universe.
Casting details for the prequel have not yet been announced. It also remains unclear whether Ruth Gemmell, who plays the older Violet in the main series, will appear in any framing scenes or narrative transitions. The limited-series format nevertheless gives the producers room to explore a self-contained love story without interrupting the chronology of the principal show.
The decision also reflects a broader trend in streaming entertainment. Successful franchises are increasingly being expanded not only through sequels but through character histories, alternate timelines and interconnected stories. Such projects allow platforms to extend audience engagement while preserving recognizable worlds and characters.
For Bridgerton, Violet is a particularly strategic choice. Her marriage to Edmund represents the emotional foundation from which many of the family’s later romantic ideals emerge. Exploring that relationship could therefore add new context to the entire franchise rather than simply extending it.
The next chapter of Bridgerton is going backward in time to explain where its idea of love began.
