Michael Douglas Recalls Kobe Bryant’s Visits to Catherine Zeta-Jones

A Hollywood romance once had an unexpected NBA subplot.

Los Angeles, United States

Michael Douglas has revealed a little-known episode from the early stages of his relationship with Catherine Zeta-Jones, recalling how NBA legend Kobe Bryant regularly appeared at her Los Angeles home before Douglas and the actress became a couple. The story appears in Douglas’ new memoir, One Helluva Ride, where he revisits the beginnings of a relationship that eventually became one of Hollywood’s longest-lasting marriages.

Douglas and Zeta-Jones first met at the Deauville American Film Festival in France in 1998. Their courtship developed slowly because Douglas was living in New York while Zeta-Jones maintained a residence in Pacific Palisades. During that period, Bryant lived nearby and, according to Douglas, frequently found reasons to visit the actress.

Douglas recounts the situation with humor, suggesting that Bryant repeatedly used his missing dog as an excuse to stop by Zeta-Jones’ home. The anecdote portrays the future basketball icon at an early stage of his own career, before he met Vanessa Laine, whom he would later marry.

Zeta-Jones herself later confirmed that Bryant had been her neighbor. Following his death in a helicopter crash in January 2020, she remembered him publicly as a young and ambitious athlete whose basketball court could be seen from her property. She also recalled that his dog repeatedly entered her garden, creating an unexpected connection between the two neighbors.

Douglas, meanwhile, was pursuing Zeta-Jones from across the country. He has written that he became interested in her after seeing an advance screening of The Mask of Zorro, describing her as intelligent, funny, confident and strikingly beautiful. Their conversations gradually became more frequent despite demanding professional schedules.

The relationship eventually became serious. Douglas and Zeta-Jones became engaged on New Year’s Eve in 1999 and married in November 2000 at New York’s Plaza Hotel. They later had two children and remained together despite a temporary separation in 2013.

The anecdote involving Bryant adds an unexpected layer to an already well-documented Hollywood love story. It also captures a moment before all three figures reached the stages of life for which they would later become internationally recognized.

Before legends become history, they are simply people crossing paths.
