The ceremony rewarded experienced performers while its comedy produced uneven results.

Matthew Rhys delivered the defining achievement of the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards by becoming the first performer to win two lead-acting categories during the same ceremony. He received the limited-series prize for The Beast in Me before winning lead actor in a comedy for Widow’s Bay.
The victories also made Rhys the first actor to collect lead-performance Emmys across drama, comedy and limited-series television. His earlier drama award came in 2018 for The Americans. The unprecedented combination reflected a career built on moving between genres without becoming confined to a single type of character.
Widow’s Bay emerged as the dominant comedy, winning outstanding comedy series and awards for Rhys, Kate O’Flynn and Stephen Root. The Pitt retained the outstanding drama-series title, while Noah Wyle won lead actor. DTF St. Louisreceived the award for outstanding limited or anthology series.
The ceremony also recognized several veteran performers. Jean Smart earned her fifth consecutive lead-comedy-actress victory for Hacks, taking her career total to eight acting Emmys. Allison Janney likewise reached eight after winning supporting actress in a drama for The Diplomat. Rhea Seehorn finally received her first Emmy for Pluribus, years after her acclaimed work in Better Call Saul repeatedly went unrewarded.
Mariska Hargitay became the first woman in 15 years to host the ceremony alone. Her self-deprecating monologue and willingness to make fun of her long association with Law & Order: Special Victims Unit established an informal tone, although repeated references to the series and two musical segments divided critics. The opening cross-country routine was widely considered weaker than her later interactions with the audience.
More successful comedic moments included Martin Short theatrically tearing up his acceptance speech after losing to Rhys and Marcello Hernández enthusiastically inviting several celebrities to dinner with his family. Taylor Swift also appeared in a prerecorded Law & Order sketch alongside Hargitay.
The evening’s emotional centre came when Michael J. Fox received the Bob Hope Humanitarian Award for his work supporting Parkinson’s research. Tributes to deceased television and entertainment figures, including Dolly Parton, Rob Reiner and Catherine O’Hara, introduced moments of reflection into a ceremony otherwise structured around rapid presentations and broad comedy.
The 2026 Emmys ultimately belonged less to spectacle than to performers whose careers demonstrate television’s increasing range. The uneven jokes will fade quickly, but Rhys’s historic double victory and the recognition of artists such as Seehorn, Smart, Janney and Fox gave the ceremony its lasting significance.
