Liverpool Hijacks Newcastle Deal to Sign Víctor Muñoz

The English champions moved decisively to secure Spain’s emerging winger.

LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND — June 2026. Liverpool has reportedly reached an agreement to sign Spanish international Víctor Muñoz after intervening at the final stage of negotiations between Osasuna and Newcastle United. The Premier League club moved rapidly to activate the winger’s €40 million release clause and secure personal terms, transforming a transfer that had appeared close to completion for Newcastle.

The operation represents one of the first major surprises of the summer transfer market. Newcastle had spent several days negotiating with Osasuna and believed it was in an advanced position to complete the signing. Liverpool’s late intervention, however, changed the direction of the deal by offering the amount required to release Muñoz from his contract and presenting the player with the opportunity to join one of Europe’s most prominent clubs.

Muñoz, 22, emerged as one of LaLiga’s most exciting young attackers during his season with Osasuna. His speed, direct running and ability to attack open spaces made him a central figure in the Navarre club’s offensive structure. Those performances also earned him a place in Spain’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, significantly increasing his international profile.

The winger joined Osasuna from Real Madrid in 2025 for approximately €5 million and signed a contract running until 2030. Madrid retained 50% of the financial rights associated with a future transfer, as well as preferential conditions that allowed the club to consider bringing him back. The agreement now positions the Spanish giant to receive a substantial share of Liverpool’s payment.

Real Madrid had the option to recover Muñoz for a figure reportedly between €8 million and €10 million, but the club did not consider him an immediate priority for its first-team squad. Its attacking positions already contain significant competition, limiting the minutes available to another young winger. Accepting its percentage of the transfer therefore offered Madrid a considerable financial return without adding another player to an already crowded roster.

Osasuna also faced a difficult decision because Muñoz’s release clause limited its negotiating power once a club agreed to pay the full amount. The Spanish side had attempted to improve the structure of Newcastle’s offer, which reportedly included a fixed payment of more than €30 million and additional performance-related variables. Liverpool avoided prolonged negotiations by moving directly toward the contractual clause.

The transfer will provide Osasuna with one of the largest revenues in its history, although half of the proceeds will go to Real Madrid under the previous agreement. Even with that division, the operation confirms the value generated by Muñoz during his brief period in Pamplona. His departure will nevertheless leave a significant sporting vacancy in a team that relied heavily on his pace and creativity.

Newcastle had identified Muñoz as a priority target while restructuring its attack. The club viewed his versatility as especially valuable because he can operate on either wing and also occupy more central attacking positions. His profile appeared compatible with the intensity, verticality and pressing demands of the Premier League.

Liverpool’s intervention demonstrates the aggressive recruitment strategy the club continues to apply in the transfer market. Rather than entering a prolonged bidding contest, its executives waited until the conditions of the deal became clear before acting decisively. The payment of the release clause removed Osasuna’s ability to reject the operation and shifted the final decision toward the player.

Personal terms between Liverpool and Muñoz were reportedly agreed verbally soon after the English club entered negotiations. The transfer must still pass through the standard contractual, medical and registration procedures before becoming official. His participation with Spain at the World Cup may influence the timing of the medical examination and public presentation.

For Muñoz, the move represents a rapid transformation in a career that only recently entered the highest level of Spanish football. Developed initially in Barcelona’s academy before joining Real Madrid’s youth system, he continued his progression through Castilla and later established himself at Osasuna. His experience in different football environments contributed to a technically versatile and tactically adaptable profile.

His principal attributes include acceleration, close control and the ability to carry the ball over long distances. Muñoz frequently attacks defenders directly and can create advantages during transitions, qualities particularly valuable in the Premier League. His movement without the ball also allows him to exploit spaces behind defensive lines and provide depth from wide areas.

The winger still has areas to develop before establishing himself regularly at Liverpool. His finishing, physical strength and decision-making in the final third will be tested against faster and more aggressive defensive opponents. Competition for places will also be considerably greater than at Osasuna, where he received the continuity required to accelerate his development.

Liverpool appears to view the transfer as a strategic investment rather than a guaranteed immediate solution. At 22, Muñoz offers sufficient experience to contribute to the first team while retaining considerable potential for improvement. The €40 million price reflects both his current performance and the expectation that his market value could rise substantially.

His arrival could also affect Liverpool’s decisions regarding other attacking players. The club continues to evaluate the balance of its forward line and may consider additional departures or signings during the summer. Muñoz’s ability to play in several positions gives the coaching staff greater flexibility when designing rotations and tactical adjustments.

The operation is another setback for Newcastle in its effort to compete with established Premier League powers for high-level talent. Although the club possesses substantial financial resources and an ambitious sporting project, negotiations remain vulnerable when rivals offer stronger competitive prestige or act more decisively. Losing Muñoz after several days of advanced talks will generate scrutiny of Newcastle’s recruitment process.

Muñoz now approaches the most demanding stage of his professional career. His performances in Spain demonstrated that he could influence matches at an elite domestic level, but Liverpool will require consistency, tactical discipline and the capacity to perform under intense pressure. The transfer provides him with an exceptional platform, while placing his development under immediate international attention.
