Tadej Pogačar strengthened his position at the top of the Vuelta a España after an extraordinary third stage was halted because of extreme weather conditions. The Slovenian had already established himself as the race leader during the opening days and remained in the red jersey after organizers were forced to neutralize the competition. Severe hail and rapidly deteriorating conditions made continuing increasingly dangerous for the peloton. The episode transformed what should have been another day of racing into a test of safety and judgment.
Pogačar played a visible role as conditions worsened, using the authority that comes with both his palmarès and his position as race leader to signal that continuing was no longer reasonable. Other riders followed as the peloton sought shelter from the intense hailstorm. The stage was eventually stopped with approximately 16 kilometers remaining, preventing the extreme conditions from determining the sporting outcome. For the general classification contenders, the priority shifted instantly from gaining seconds to avoiding unnecessary risk.
The unusual interruption does little to diminish Pogačar’s strong opening to the race. Wearing the leader’s jersey places the Slovenian in the position he knows best: controlling rivals while forcing other teams to decide when and how aggressively to challenge him. His presence at the front also gives UAE Team Emirates greater influence over the tactical rhythm of the Vuelta. Every stage now becomes part of a larger calculation between defending the advantage and conserving energy for the decisive mountains ahead.
The weather may have prevented the third stage from delivering the sporting battle expected on the road, but it also highlighted another dimension of leadership in professional cycling. Pogačar’s status allowed him to influence the peloton when racing conditions crossed into genuine danger. The Vuelta remains far from decided, and the most demanding terrain is still ahead, but the Slovenian has already secured the position every contender wants. For now, the red jersey and the initiative belong to him.
