The former champion believes loyalty must not limit ambition.

SILVERSTONE, UNITED KINGDOM — July 2026. Former Formula One world champion Jenson Button has advised Max Verstappen to prioritize his career and consider leaving Red Bull if the team cannot restore its competitiveness. Button believes the Dutch driver must act “selfishly” when evaluating his future. Mercedes remains one of the most prominent possible destinations.

Verstappen is contracted to Red Bull until the end of 2028, but performance-related clauses could allow him to leave earlier. The four-time world champion is enduring a difficult season as Red Bull struggles to match Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren. His frustration intensified after an accident ended his British Grand Prix.

Button said Verstappen’s management is right to explore alternatives amid significant changes within Red Bull. Several influential figures have departed the organization, while uncertainty continues around its technical direction. The former champion warned that remaining with an uncompetitive project could gradually damage Verstappen’s motivation and legacy.

Mercedes has become the leading force under Formula One’s new regulations, with Kimi Antonelli and George Russell delivering strong results. However, team principal Toto Wolff has publicly indicated that both drivers remain central to the team’s plans. Any Verstappen move would therefore require a major restructuring of the current lineup.

Button drew on his own career experience, recalling the risks involved in changing teams and the importance of choosing the right competitive environment. He emphasized that Verstappen’s exceptional ability guarantees interest from rival organizations, but not necessarily an immediate seat. The decision could define the next phase of one of Formula One’s most successful careers.

For Verstappen, loyalty matters—but winning may ultimately matter more.
