Ilia Topuria Targets UFC Return After Defeat That Changed His Career

His first defeat has renewed his fighting ambitions.

TBILISI, GEORGIA

Ilia Topuria has revealed plans to return to the UFC as early as April 2027, reflecting on the first defeat of his professional mixed martial arts career and acknowledging that he briefly considered retirement following his loss to Justin Gaethje. In his first extensive interview since their highly publicized encounter at the White House, the Spanish-Georgian fighter described an experience that forced him to reconsider his future in the sport.

Speaking to Spanish newspaper ABC, Topuria revisited the June 14 confrontation in Washington, where Gaethje ended his unbeaten record and captured the UFC lightweight championship. The defeat was particularly painful because it occurred during one of the most internationally visible events in the organization’s history.

The physical consequences were serious. Topuria suffered multiple fractures, including injuries around his eyes, and required medical attention after his corner stopped the contest before the fifth round. He subsequently credited his brother Aleksandre with intervening, recognizing that continuing could have exposed him to further harm.

Beyond the injuries, the result challenged the confidence that had defined his rise through the sport. Having previously defeated elite opponents including Alexander Volkanovski, Max Holloway and Charles Oliveira, Topuria had built his reputation around exceptional striking precision and an uncompromising competitive mentality.

The defeat introduced an unfamiliar reality. He acknowledged questioning whether he had already accomplished enough to walk away from professional competition. Yet the experience ultimately strengthened his desire to fight again.

Topuria now expects to resume full-contact training in January, provided his recovery progresses as anticipated. He is considering a competitive return beginning in April, although no official date or opponent has been announced.

A rematch with Gaethje remains among his preferred possibilities. The former champion believes their rivalry deserves another chapter, while recognizing that the UFC must determine the appropriate competitive arrangements.

British fighter Paddy Pimblett and lightweight contender Arman Tsarukyan have also emerged as potential opponents. Topuria’s longstanding rivalry with Pimblett offers an alternative matchup, but discussions have not produced a confirmed agreement.

His comments also addressed speculation surrounding Gaethje’s equipment during their previous encounter. Although questions had circulated about the American’s gloves and hand wrapping, Topuria acknowledged that he had no evidence establishing wrongdoing and accepted that Gaethje performed better that night.

For the UFC, his anticipated return presents several matchmaking possibilities within a competitive lightweight division. A renewed confrontation with Gaethje would carry obvious championship significance, while alternative opponents could offer a different route toward rebuilding his position.

The decisive consideration, however, remains his recovery. Medical clearance, preparation and the ability to perform safely at the highest level will determine when the former champion can return.

Topuria’s next appearance will consequently represent more than another professional contest. It will offer an opportunity to measure how an athlete previously defined by uninterrupted victories responds to the experience of defeat.

His ambition remains unmistakable, but the circumstances have changed. For the first time in his professional career, Ilia Topuria is preparing to enter the Octagon with a loss behind him and a new chapter still to be written.
