Andy Roddick Sees Alcaraz Challenge Behind Ferrero’s New Shelton Partnership

A coaching alliance could reshape tennis’s biggest rivalries.

MADRID

Former world No. 1 Andy Roddick believes Juan Carlos Ferrero’s decision to join Ben Shelton’s coaching team could carry an additional competitive motivation: helping the American challenge Carlos Alcaraz, the Spanish star Ferrero guided to six Grand Slam titles. The assessment has added intrigue to one of the most significant coaching changes ahead of the 2027 ATP season.

Speaking on his podcast Served with Andy Roddick, the former US Open champion suggested that Ferrero’s ambitions extend beyond developing another promising player. After separating from Alcaraz in December 2025, the Spanish coach is preparing to return to the international circuit with an athlete who has already demonstrated his ability to defeat his former pupil.

Shelton, currently ranked fourth in the world, defeated Alcaraz in the quarterfinals of the 2026 US Open before advancing to his first Grand Slam final, where he lost to Alexander Zverev. That achievement strengthened his credentials as a potential contender for tennis’s biggest titles.

Roddick considers the partnership particularly compelling because Ferrero understands the technical and psychological demands of competing at the highest level. Having won Roland Garros and reached world No. 1 during his playing career, the Spaniard brings experience that extends beyond his successful coaching relationship with Alcaraz.

The former American champion also introduced a more provocative interpretation. He suggested that Ferrero’s competitive pride might make the prospect of defeating his former player especially appealing. However, this remains Roddick’s personal assessment rather than a motivation publicly confirmed by Ferrero.

The coaching arrangement has a distinctive structure. Ferrero will work alongside Bryan Shelton, Ben’s father and longtime coach, rather than replacing him. Their collaboration is intended to combine continuity with additional expertise in preparing for major tournaments.

Roddick highlighted the complementary nature of their experience. Bryan Shelton has guided his son’s professional development, while Ferrero has already helped transform an emerging talent into a multiple Grand Slam champion.

Clay-court tennis could become an important area of improvement. Ferrero’s technical knowledge of the surface may help Shelton develop greater tactical consistency and expand his competitive options against opponents whose movement and defensive capabilities present different challenges.

The partnership also carries broader implications for a men’s circuit increasingly shaped by Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. Both players represent formidable obstacles for competitors seeking Grand Slam success, making technical refinement and strategic preparation particularly valuable.

Shelton enters the collaboration following a successful 2026 season that included four ATP titles and his breakthrough appearance in a major final. Nevertheless, continued progress will depend on more than adding a celebrated coach. Consistency, physical preparation, tactical adaptation and performance under pressure remain essential.

Ferrero and Shelton have publicly emphasized their shared enthusiasm for the project, focusing on professional development rather than personal rivalry. Whether the arrangement produces another Grand Slam champion remains an open question.

For Roddick, the possibility of Ferrero preparing Shelton to challenge Alcaraz adds a compelling dimension to the partnership. For the players themselves, the meaningful evidence will emerge when their preparation is tested on the court.

The 2027 season could therefore introduce a fascinating competitive dynamic, with a former mentor potentially helping shape one of the most demanding challenges facing the player he once guided to international prominence.
