Ferrell’s attendance was unsurprising given his longstanding interest in football and his involvement as part of the ownership group behind Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC.

The glamorous audience could not protect the hosts from defeat, but the loss did not end their campaign. The United States finished first in Group D after earlier victories over Paraguay and Australia and will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32 on July 1 in Santa Clara, California.
One encouraging development was the return of Christian Pulisic, who entered during the second half after recovering from a calf injury. The American captain received one of the loudest ovations of the evening and quickly added speed and creativity to the attack.
