HBO has announced three important casting additions for the second season of its Harry Potter television adaptation. Lenny Rush will portray Dobby, Billy Barratt will play the young Tom Riddle and Bonnie Hill will assume the role of Ginny Weasley in the season based on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
Rush, a 17-year-old BAFTA-winning actor known for the BBC comedy Am I Being Unreasonable?, will bring the Malfoy family’s house-elf to life. Dobby secretly attempts to prevent Harry from returning to Hogwarts after learning that a dangerous conspiracy threatens the school. Toby Jones previously voiced the computer-generated character in the films.
Barratt will portray the teenage Tom Riddle, the former Hogwarts student who later becomes Lord Voldemort. Harry encounters him through an enchanted diary that preserves fragments of Riddle’s personality and memories. Barratt became the youngest winner of an International Emmy for best actor through Responsible Child and has appeared in Kraven the Hunter and Bring Her Back.
Hill replaces Gracie Cochrane as Ginny Weasley after Cochrane withdrew because of what her family described as unforeseen circumstances. Ginny begins her first year at Hogwarts during the second story and becomes central to the mystery surrounding the Chamber of Secrets. Hill’s previous work includes The Six Triple Eight and Girl Troop vs Aliens.
The new performers join Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Arabella Stanton as Hermione and Alastair Stout as Ron. Kit Harington will appear as Gilderoy Lockhart, while John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, Paapa Essiedu and Nick Frost continue as Dumbledore, McGonagall, Snape and Hagrid. The first season premieres on HBO and HBO Max on December 25, while the second remains in preproduction.
