Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, have reportedly returned to the United Kingdom with their children after six years in California. According to several British media reports, the couple arrived in Birmingham on Wednesday aboard a private flight with Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The family has not publicly confirmed every detail of the move.
The Sussexes are expected to settle in a residence in the Cotswolds, an affluent rural area in southwestern England that is home to numerous public figures. Reports also indicate that arrangements have already been made for Archie and Lilibet to attend a new school, suggesting that the return is intended to be more than a temporary visit.
Harry and Meghan left Britain in 2020 after withdrawing from their roles as senior working members of the royal family. They later moved to California, where they developed media and charitable projects independent of the monarchy. In their interview with Oprah Winfrey, the couple described intense press scrutiny, institutional isolation and a lack of support as central reasons for their departure.
The reported move represents a significant change in Harry’s public position. In a previous BBC interview, he said he could not imagine bringing his wife and children back to Britain under the existing circumstances, although he also expressed sadness that his children could not experience more of their British heritage.
Harry is believed to have made some progress in repairing his relationship with King Charles III, but tensions with his brother, Prince William, reportedly remain unresolved. The family’s return could create opportunities for greater contact with the monarchy, although there is no confirmation that the Sussexes will resume official royal duties.
Security will remain one of the most sensitive issues. Harry has repeatedly argued that inadequate protection made it unsafe to bring his family to the United Kingdom. Their arrival is therefore likely to renew debate over whether publicly funded security should be provided and under what conditions. The move may mark a personal reconciliation with Britain, but it does not automatically resolve the institutional and family disputes that drove the Sussexes away.
