Warner Bros. wants to expand the franchise, but creative legitimacy remains unresolved.

Warner Bros. remains interested in extending The Matrix universe, although the next film has yet to secure a production schedule, confirmed cast or release date. Drew Goddard, the filmmaker behind The Cabin in the Woods and screenwriter of The Martian, is positioned to lead the project into its first cinematic era without a Wachowski directing.
The studio originally announced in 2024 that Goddard would write and direct a new installment based on an idea he presented to Warner Bros. Lana Wachowski was attached as an executive producer, providing continuity with the franchise she created alongside her sister Lilly. The project, however, has remained largely inactive in public, with no details about its story or relationship to the previous four films.
Lilly Wachowski has now suggested that Goddard does not intend to proceed without the creators’ approval. According to the filmmaker, he would first present his proposal to both sisters before taking the project further. Their endorsement would not necessarily require them to return as directors or writers, but it could give the new film the creative legitimacy needed to avoid appearing as a purely commercial extension.
Neither sister appears interested in resuming direct control. Lilly has said she is tired of working within the universe, while Lana returned alone to direct The Matrix Resurrections in 2021. That installment reunited Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, but its divisive reception demonstrated the difficulty of revisiting a story whose philosophical identity is inseparable from its original creators.
It remains unknown whether Reeves, Moss or Laurence Fishburne would participate in Goddard’s film. The absence of casting and production commitments suggests that the project remains developmental despite Warner Bros.’ previous announcement. Its central challenge is therefore larger than finding another story about simulated reality: the studio must determine whether The Matrix can evolve under a new creative authority without becoming the kind of commercial system the franchise originally questioned.
Reinvention earns legitimacy when it respects the meaning of what came before.
