Centenarian Families Reveal a Potential Blueprint for Healthier Ageing

Exceptional longevity appears to protect more than one generation.

NEW YORK, UNITED STATES

People whose parents reach exceptionally advanced ages may face substantially lower risks of cardiovascular disease, hypertension and premature death, according to research published in JAMA Network Open. The analysis combined data from 4,030 participants enrolled in three long-running studies in the United States and the United Kingdom. Researchers compared the descendants of exceptionally long-lived parents with adults whose parents had shorter lifespans.

Across the combined cohorts, descendants of exceptionally long-lived people had a 42 percent lower risk of death at any given age. They also showed a 33 percent lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 32 percent lower risk of developing high blood pressure. Death occurred approximately three years later on average, while hypertension appeared about five years later.

The popular description of the research as a study exclusively about children of centenarians requires qualification. Although some participants had a parent who reached 100, the scientific analysis generally defined exceptional parental longevity as having at least one parent who survived to age 95 or beyond. This broader definition allowed investigators to compare similar patterns across the LonGenity study, the New England Centenarian Study and the UK Biobank.

The associations remained largely consistent after researchers accounted for smoking, alcohol consumption, exercise, diet, education and socioeconomic conditions. This persistence suggests that inherited biological characteristics may contribute to slower cardiovascular ageing. Shared family environments, health habits and other unmeasured influences could also explain part of the advantage.

The apparent protection was not universal. Researchers found no clear reduction in cancer risk, while results concerning stroke varied between the three study populations. The research was also observational, meaning it identified associations but could not establish that having a long-lived parent directly causes better health or a longer life.

Scientists hope that studying these families will help identify genetic pathways and biological mechanisms capable of delaying age-related disease. Such discoveries could eventually inform preventive treatments for the wider population. Family longevity remains an advantage rather than a guarantee, and established factors such as physical activity, nutrition, medical monitoring and avoiding tobacco continue to influence individual health.
