Friday’s fastest rider knows that MotoGP rewards results, not early impressions.
ALCAÑIZ, SPAIN
Marco Bezzecchi dominated Friday practice at the Aragón Grand Prix, setting a new MotorLand lap record with a time of 1:45.455. The Aprilia rider finished ahead of Álex Márquez and reigning world champion Marc Márquez in an exceptionally close session. Only 0.038 seconds separated the leading three riders.
The record changed hands several times during the final minutes as the Márquez brothers and Bezzecchi exchanged fastest laps. Bezzecchi ultimately secured first place and direct passage into the second qualifying session. His performance demonstrated that Aprilia could challenge Ducati at a circuit traditionally associated with Marc Márquez’s strength.
Despite the result, Bezzecchi rejected suggestions that he had become the weekend’s favorite. He observed that Marc Márquez completed only one serious time attack and may still possess considerable unused speed. The Italian expects every leading rider to reveal more of their potential during qualifying and the sprint race.
Bezzecchi’s physical condition also encourages caution. He continues to experience discomfort in his knee and shoulder, while MotorLand’s predominantly left-handed layout places additional strain on the body. Although the pain did not prevent him from producing the fastest lap, maintaining that intensity across Saturday and Sunday presents a different challenge.
Álex Márquez finished only 0.025 seconds behind Bezzecchi after improving both his motorcycle setup and riding approach. Marc Márquez followed another 0.013 seconds back and acknowledged the pace of both rivals. Their proximity suggests that qualifying could be decided by a minor mistake, a change in track temperature or the ability to find a clear final lap.
Bezzecchi has therefore treated his record as evidence of Aprilia’s competitiveness rather than proof of superiority. Friday established him as a genuine threat, but the decisive comparison will come under race conditions, where tyre management, physical endurance and tactical judgment matter as much as outright speed.
