Power and composure carried the Frenchman into new territory.
CINCINNATI, OHIO
Arthur Fils reached the first ATP Masters 1000 final of his career after defeating Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 6-4 in the Cincinnati Open semifinals. The 22-year-old Frenchman needed only 67 minutes to eliminate the seventh-seeded Italian, controlling the match with an aggressive combination of serving, movement and forehand power. Fils produced six aces and 22 winners while preventing Cobolli from establishing the extended baseline exchanges that had defined his earlier victories. The result extended Fils’ perfect record against the Italian to three matches.
A spectacular running forehand passing shot helped Fils shift the momentum during the opening set. Once he secured the first break, his confidence increased and he began dictating rallies from inside the baseline. Cobolli attempted to vary his pace and move forward, but Fils repeatedly found passing angles or forced defensive errors. The Frenchman maintained the same intensity in the second set and protected his advantage without allowing the match to become complicated.
The victory represents another major step in a season shaped by both recovery and accelerated progress. Fils returned to competition after a prolonged absence caused by a lower-back stress fracture and later had to manage additional physical problems. Since returning, he has won the Barcelona Open, reached the Miami and Madrid Masters semifinals and strengthened his position in the race for the ATP Finals. Cincinnati has confirmed that his success is no longer limited to clay and that his explosive game can be equally effective on North American hard courts.
Cobolli leaves Ohio after achieving his own breakthrough by reaching a Masters 1000 semifinal for the first time. The Italian defeated Tommy Paul in three sets during the quarterfinals and demonstrated the resilience that has carried him into the sport’s leading group. Against Fils, however, he struggled to create sustained pressure on return and could not reproduce the momentum-changing comebacks of previous rounds. His run nevertheless reinforces his arrival as a consistent threat at major tournaments.
Fils will face Frances Tiafoe in the championship match after the American defeated Brandon Nakashima 7-5, 6-3. Their meeting will be the first Masters 1000 men’s final contested by two Black players, giving the occasion significance beyond the trophy itself. Both men have advanced through Cincinnati with assertive serving and attacking tennis, suggesting a final built around speed, athleticism and short points. For Fils, victory would complete one of the most important weeks of his young career and establish him as a genuine contender ahead of the US Open.
