Jessica Simpson to Tell Her Story in a New Netflix Documentary

by Phoenix 24

More than two decades after reality television defined her public image, the singer and entrepreneur is inviting cameras back to examine her career on her own terms.

LOS ANGELES.— Jessica Simpson will be the subject of a feature-length Netflix documentary scheduled to premiere in 2027. The still-untitled production will explore her transformation from pop singer and reality television personality into a successful entrepreneur, author and returning performer. Netflix has not yet announced a specific release date.

BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Joe Pearlman will direct the documentary. His previous projects include films about Robbie Williams and Lewis Capaldi, as well as Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts. The production is being developed by Gunpowder & Sky, with former MTV executive Van Toffler serving as producer.

Simpson became internationally famous during the late 1990s and has sold more than 20 million records worldwide. Her marriage to Nick Lachey was documented in MTV’s Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, which aired for three seasons and strongly influenced how audiences perceived her. She later built one of the entertainment industry’s most successful celebrity fashion brands and published the bestselling 2020 memoir Open Book.

The documentary follows Simpson’s return to original music after a 15-year hiatus through the Nashville Canyon EPs. It is expected to revisit the tension between her carefully marketed celebrity persona and the private experiences she later disclosed as an author. After years of being interpreted through tabloid headlines and reality television, Simpson now has an opportunity to reclaim authorship of her own image.
