VENICE, ITALY — July 2026. George Clooney will receive the honorary Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival. The award will recognize his work as an actor, director and producer across a career spanning television, independent cinema and major Hollywood productions. The festival will take place from September 2 to 12, bringing Clooney back to an event that has accompanied several important moments in his professional journey. His most recent appearance at the Lido came with the Netflix film Jay Kelly.
Clooney described Venice as his favorite film festival and said receiving the Golden Lion represented an enormous honor. With his characteristic humor, he added that the recognition might also be evidence that he is getting older, but said he would gladly accept it. His relationship with Venice has developed over decades through premieres, screenings and appearances that strengthened his international profile. The lifetime achievement award now places him among the most distinguished figures honored by the historic Italian festival.
Festival director Alberto Barbera described Clooney as a complete, charismatic and original artist who transformed a profound vocation into one of contemporary cinema’s most prominent careers. Barbera emphasized that Clooney’s early professional path offered no shortcuts, beginning with minor television roles and appearances in low-budget films. His breakthrough arrived through the medical drama ER, where he became internationally recognized for combining natural screen presence with credibility and emotional accessibility. That success opened the way to a film career characterized by uncommon versatility.
Clooney has moved through war films, political dramas, thrillers, sophisticated comedies and science fiction without abandoning the ironic and reflective qualities associated with his performances. His credits include Three Kings, Syriana, Michael Clayton, Ocean’s Eleven, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, Gravity, Solaris, The Descendants and Up in the Air. Festival organizers praised his ability to make characters appear believable, approachable and human while maintaining the glamour traditionally associated with major film stars. His appeal, Barbera noted, rests as much on professional credibility as on public image.
His work behind the camera has added another dimension to his career, with nine films directed across more than two decades. The full program for the 2026 Venice Film Festival will be announced on July 23. Maggie Gyllenhaal will preside over the main competition jury, joined by Kaouther Ben Hania, Daniel Blumberg, Francesco Casetti, Xavier Giannoli, Shahrbanoo Sadat and Johnnie To. Clooney’s honorary Golden Lion will provide one of the central moments of an edition expected to unite established filmmakers, emerging voices and major international productions.
