Zelenski Urges the United States to Tighten Sanctions and Push Russia Toward Peace Talks

A demand once whispered in diplomatic corridors has now become an open call for action from Kyiv’s highest office.

London, October 2025
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenski asked the United States to expand its sanctions against Russia, insisting that broader economic pressure is the only way to bring Moscow to the negotiating table. Speaking during meetings with European leaders in London, he warned that partial restrictions on Russian companies have failed to alter the course of the war.

Zelenski emphasized that the conflict can only move toward a political solution if Russia faces deeper isolation from the global financial system. He urged Washington to target the energy sector entirely, describing it as the backbone of the Kremlin’s military capacity. His remarks coincided with renewed appeals for long-range weapons and tighter control over companies accused of helping Moscow evade trade restrictions.

European officials attending the London talks expressed support for continued aid to Ukraine and signaled readiness to coordinate new rounds of measures with Washington. Diplomats from France, Germany and Poland privately noted that any escalation in sanctions must be accompanied by a clear framework for future negotiations.

In Washington, senior advisers acknowledged that the White House is reviewing additional sanctions, though analysts caution that broader energy measures could trigger price volatility and strain relations with allies still dependent on Russian supplies. For now, the U.S. Treasury has maintained its stance that sanctions will remain until Moscow shows concrete willingness to end hostilities.

The call from Kyiv adds pressure on Western governments as the war enters another winter of attrition. Russia has continued missile strikes on Ukrainian cities while expanding its military positions in the east. Meanwhile, humanitarian agencies warn that new energy disruptions could deepen the crisis for civilians.

Observers from the Council on Foreign Relations in New York described Zelenski’s strategy as an effort to restore momentum and signal that diplomacy without leverage is meaningless. In Brussels, the European External Action Service noted that coordinated sanctions and sustained military assistance remain the only tools capable of shaping the next phase of the conflict.

For Ukraine, the message is both urgent and clear: economic pressure must translate into political consequence. Whether that transformation occurs will depend on the speed and unity of Western action in the weeks ahead.
