Watch Movies and TV Shows Without Internet Using Your TV’s USB Port

Your favorite content doesn’t always need a Wi-Fi connection.

TECHNOLOGY — August 2026

A television’s USB port can do much more than power accessories or charge small devices. By connecting a USB flash drive or an external storage device containing downloaded movies or TV shows, users can enjoy offline entertainment without relying on an internet connection.

Most modern smart TVs support playback of common video formats such as MP4, MKV and AVI directly through their built-in media player. After inserting the USB device, users simply access the television’s media menu, browse stored files and begin playback without the need for streaming services or Wi-Fi.

Compatibility depends on the television model and the video codec used. If a file fails to play, converting it to a widely supported format—typically MP4 encoded with H.264 video and AAC audio—usually resolves the issue. Some televisions also support external hard drives, provided they meet the required file system and power specifications.

Offline playback offers several advantages, including uninterrupted viewing in locations with limited or no internet access, reduced data consumption and consistent picture quality unaffected by network congestion. It is particularly useful during travel, power outages affecting broadband service or in remote areas where streaming is unavailable.

The USB port continues to offer a practical and reliable solution for offline entertainment, allowing users to access their favorite content anytime without depending on an internet connection.
