New research suggests that moving faster can partly compensate when taking more steps is difficult.

Both the number of daily steps and the pace at which they are taken are associated with a lower risk of premature death, according to research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. The findings challenge the idea that step count alone provides a complete measure of walking-related health benefits.
Researchers analysed wearable-device data from 64,743 UK Biobank participants aged between 40 and 69. Each participant wore an activity tracker for seven days between 2013 and 2015, allowing the team to evaluate daily movement and walking cadence before examining subsequent deaths from all causes and cardiovascular disease.
Walking between 7,500 and 10,000 steps per day was associated with the greatest reduction in mortality risk, regardless of pace. The results do not suggest that everyone must reach 10,000 steps, a target frequently promoted by fitness devices despite not representing a universal medical threshold.
Intensity provided an additional pathway. Walking at approximately 90 steps per minute for at least 30 minutes a day was associated with lower mortality even after total step count was considered. For relatively sedentary adults taking fewer than 5,000 steps, increasing pace appeared to offer meaningful benefits without requiring a dramatic expansion in walking time.
The opposite strategy may also help. People unable or unwilling to walk quickly could potentially gain similar benefits by accumulating more steps at a comfortable pace. The findings therefore support flexible recommendations adapted to age, mobility, physical condition and daily circumstances rather than a single prescription for everyone.
The research remains observational and cannot establish that walking patterns directly caused the reduction in mortality. Activity was recorded during only one week, while illness, socioeconomic conditions and pre-existing fitness may influence both movement and long-term health. Nevertheless, the use of wearable devices provides more objective evidence than studies relying exclusively on self-reported exercise.
For public-health policy, the message is practical: increasing movement does not require transforming every walk into intense exercise. A person can add distance, increase cadence or combine both strategies according to individual capacity. Even modest changes may be more sustainable when incorporated into commuting, errands and ordinary routines.
