Víctor y Águila conquer the Montsant Ultra Trail in a weekend of endurance and elevation

Between rock and silence, the runners faced the sacred geography of Catalonia with the pulse of mountain hearts.

Tarragona, October 2025. The Montsant Natural Park once again became the stage for one of Spain’s most demanding mountain races, the Ultra Trail Montsant, where more than a thousand athletes challenged distance, fatigue and altitude across rugged Catalan terrain. Víctor Rodríguez and Marta Águila emerged as the absolute winners of the 2025 edition after a grueling test that combined endurance, strategy and respect for nature.

The event, which has grown into a benchmark of Mediterranean trail running, featured several distances adapted to different levels of competition. The main race covered 106 kilometers with a cumulative elevation gain exceeding 4,000 meters, crossing emblematic locations such as La Morera de Montsant, Ulldemolins and Cornudella de Montsant. The technical terrain, marked by steep climbs and loose stone descents, tested even the most experienced participants.

Víctor Rodríguez dominated the men’s category with a time that set a new course record, combining pace control and precise management of energy reserves throughout the mountain sections. His victory consolidates him as one of the most consistent long-distance specialists in the Iberian circuit. In the women’s race, Marta Águila displayed an equally commanding performance, maintaining a steady rhythm despite the heat and uneven terrain. Her arrival at the finish line, greeted by applause and banners in the heart of Cornudella, reflected not only athletic excellence but also a moment of communal pride.

European endurance analysts highlighted the Ultra Trail Montsant as a model of balance between sport and environmental preservation. Organizers enforced strict sustainability measures, including waste reduction, the use of recyclable materials and controlled access to sensitive ecological areas. Participants were required to carry personal hydration systems and respect zero-plastic policies along the route.

In Latin America, trail-running associations have referenced the Montsant event as a blueprint for integrating local identity into sport, noting how Catalan landscapes and community volunteers transform the competition into a cultural experience. In Asia, coverage from outdoor publications in Japan and South Korea emphasized the technical features of the course, describing it as “a natural amphitheater carved by time and endurance.”

The Ultra Trail Montsant is more than a race; it is an annual pilgrimage where athletes reconnect with the rhythm of the mountains and the values of humility and persistence. The atmosphere of the finish line blended exhaustion with emotion, as runners crossed the final stretch embraced by families, supporters and local residents who have made the event part of their identity.

Since its first edition, the competition has drawn participants from over thirty countries, making it a symbol of the global trail-running community’s growth. Its philosophy, grounded in self-reliance and environmental respect, mirrors a growing movement in sports culture that seeks meaning beyond medals and records.

As night fell over the cliffs of Montsant, torches illuminated the paths where the last participants made their way to the finish. Every step, every ascent and every breath seemed to echo the same truth: conquering the mountain begins within.
