US Inflation Holds at 3.4% as Monthly Price Pressures Accelerate

A stable annual figure conceals renewed strain on household purchasing power.

WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES

United States inflation remained at 3.4% in August, unchanged from July but still well above the Federal Reserve’s 2% target. Consumer prices rose 0.4% during the month, four times July’s increase and the fastest monthly pace in three months.

Gasoline contributed significantly to the acceleration, while housing, food and other essential expenses continued placing pressure on household budgets. The increase demonstrates how energy shocks can rapidly affect transportation, production and consumer prices throughout the economy.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy costs, rose 0.3% during August and 2.4% over the previous year. This lower annual reading suggests that underlying inflation is more contained than the headline figure, but the monthly increase indicates that price stability has not yet been secured.

Real average hourly earnings declined by 0.1% during the month, meaning that price growth temporarily exceeded wage gains. Even when annual inflation stops rising, households can continue feeling poorer because the overall price level remains high and purchasing power recovers unevenly.

The figures complicate the Federal Reserve’s policy decision. Higher interest rates could suppress demand and reinforce inflation control, but they would also increase borrowing costs for households, businesses and the federal government. Keeping rates unchanged risks allowing energy and tariff-related pressures to become embedded in expectations.

The central bank must also protect its independence amid political demands for lower borrowing costs. Its credibility will depend on distinguishing temporary energy volatility from persistent inflation without reacting either too slowly or too aggressively.

Inflation can remain statistically stable while everyday life becomes more expensive.
