Ukraine Strikes Russia’s Largest Refinery Deep Inside Siberia

Long-range drones reach a strategic Russian energy hub.

OMSK, RUSSIA — July 2026. Ukrainian forces reported striking the Omsk oil refinery, Russia’s largest crude-processing facility, in one of Kyiv’s deepest drone operations since the beginning of the full-scale war. The industrial complex lies more than 2,500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, far beyond the areas traditionally exposed to Kyiv’s long-range attacks. Ukraine’s General Staff said the operation triggered a fire inside the refinery and damaged equipment considered essential to its production process.

Ukrainian Special Operations Forces identified the primary crude-oil processing unit as the principal component affected by the attack. Preliminary reports indicated that the installation hit may have been the ELU-AVT-11 unit, which has a design capacity of approximately 8.4 million metric tons annually. Images circulated on social media showed flames and a large column of dark smoke rising above the industrial area.

The refinery, controlled by Gazprom Neft, can process approximately 22 million metric tons of crude oil each year and produces gasoline, diesel, aviation kerosene and other petroleum derivatives. Its output supports civilian markets while also supplying fuels that may be used by the Russian armed forces. Ukrainian authorities described Omsk as the last of Russia’s 11 largest gasoline-producing refineries to be reached by their forces.

Vitaly Khotsenko, governor of the Omsk region, acknowledged that Ukrainian drones had reached the northern industrial sector of the city, where the refinery is located. Russian regional authorities said air defenses intercepted most of the incoming aircraft, while Ukrainian military statements maintained that at least one critical target was successfully struck. Gazprom Neft had not issued a detailed public assessment of the damage at the time of publication.

The operation formed part of Ukraine’s continuing campaign against Russia’s refining capacity, fuel distribution network and military logistics. Kyiv has increasingly targeted refineries, storage sites and other energy installations that it says contribute directly to Moscow’s ability to sustain military operations. The strike also demonstrated how the battlefield is expanding far beyond conventional front lines.

The world is watching.
