Salary and benefit payments remain at the center of the conflict
Culiacán, Sinaloa | June 2026
Academic and administrative workers of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa began an indefinite statewide strike this Monday due to the lack of extraordinary federal resources needed to cover salaries, labor benefits and financial commitments affecting the institution’s daily operation.
The work stoppage was activated across the university system after the expected federal funds were not delivered, despite previous efforts to secure support for the institution’s financial stability. According to university information, the conflict is linked to the urgent need to regularize budget flows, guarantee timely salary payments and address pending labor benefits for university employees.
The strike temporarily suspended activities in 173 campuses across the 20 municipalities of Sinaloa, as well as in university offices and organizational units. The measure affects academic, research, cultural, sports and administrative functions, creating a broad impact on one of the most important public higher education institutions in northwestern Mexico.
University workers argue that the protest is not only a labor demand, but also a call to protect the operational capacity of the institution. The lack of sufficient resources places pressure on thousands of employees and also creates uncertainty for students, families and communities that depend on the educational services provided by the UAS throughout the state.
The financial crisis has become a central issue for the university because salaries and benefits represent essential commitments that cannot remain unresolved without affecting institutional stability. Workers have insisted that the situation requires immediate attention from federal authorities, especially because the university maintains a wide educational presence and serves students from multiple regions of Sinaloa.
The suspension of activities reflects the seriousness of the problem and the frustration of the university community over the delay in the delivery of extraordinary support. While the strike remains in place, academic and administrative operations will continue suspended until there is a favorable response capable of guaranteeing the pending payments and restoring confidence among workers.
The UAS is considered a strategic institution for the social, educational and professional development of Sinaloa. Its presence in all municipalities gives it a direct role in regional mobility, access to higher education, scientific work and cultural life. For that reason, the current labor stoppage carries consequences that go beyond internal university administration.
As the conflict continues, the main expectation among workers is that federal authorities provide a clear and timely solution to prevent the crisis from deepening. The strike has placed the university’s financial situation at the center of public attention and has opened a critical moment for dialogue, negotiation and institutional response.
For now, the statewide strike remains active while academic and administrative workers wait for the resources needed to cover salaries, benefits and essential commitments. The outcome of the negotiations will be decisive for the return to normal activities and for the stability of the Autonomous University of Sinaloa in the coming days.
