A failed firebombing adds another unresolved case to Europe’s expanding security concerns.
MUNICH, GERMANY
German police arrested two Bulgarian nationals after incendiary devices were thrown from a moving vehicle toward a construction site near the headquarters of defense-technology companies Rohde & Schwarz and Helsing. Investigators believe the attack may have been politically motivated, but its precise objective and possible organizers remain unknown.
A witness contacted police around midnight after observing the devices being launched from a car. Two incendiary objects ignited, while a third reportedly failed to explode. Officers quickly extinguished the resulting fire, and specialists secured the unexploded device. Authorities reported no injuries or significant material damage.
Police subsequently detained a 38-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman at a nearby petrol station. Both are Bulgarian citizens and are being investigated for their alleged participation in the attack. Their arrest establishes suspected operational involvement, but nationality alone provides no evidence of motive, ideological affiliation or direction by a foreign government.
Rohde & Schwarz develops communications, radar, electronic-security and anti-drone systems used by public authorities and armed forces. Helsing specializes in artificial intelligence and unmanned systems for military applications. Although the devices landed near their facilities, investigators have not publicly established which company was the intended target.
The incident comes amid heightened concern about sabotage against European defense production and critical infrastructure. German and other European officials have accused Russia of conducting hybrid operations intended to disrupt military support for Ukraine, while Moscow denies those allegations. Investigators are also considering domestic extremist motives in several recent cases. No Russian connection has been established in the Munich attack. Determining who benefited from the operation, and whether the suspects acted independently or under instruction, will be essential before the incident can responsibly be placed within a broader geopolitical campaign.
