The United States Mint has released an official one-dollar coin featuring President Donald Trump as part of the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations. The coin is legal tender, although it is being marketed primarily as a collectible and has not been placed directly into general circulation.
Trump’s portrait appears on the obverse alongside the inscriptions “Liberty,” “In God We Trust” and “1776–2026.” The reverse displays the Presidential Seal, a bald eagle and the number 250. The coin was designed by US Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna using an official White House photograph.
Collectors can purchase rolls of 25 coins for $61 or bags of 100 for $154.50, both above their combined face value. The Mint also produced 250,000 coins on Independence Day with a special “July 4th” mark, which are being distributed randomly among the rolls and bags.
The release has generated legal and historical controversy because the United States traditionally avoids portraying living political leaders on its currency. The 2020 legislation authorising the anniversary coin prohibits a living person’s image on the reverse but does not expressly impose the same restriction on the obverse, which the Treasury used for Trump’s portrait. Critics argue that the design nevertheless conflicts with the democratic principle that national currency should not serve as personal political branding.
Claims that Trump is the first sitting president ever depicted on an American coin require qualification. Calvin Coolidge appeared while in office on a commemorative half-dollar issued for the nation’s 150th anniversary in 1926. Trump’s coin is still extraordinary because it places a current president on a modern, circulating-quality dollar produced under an administration he controls. The controversy therefore concerns more than numismatics: it reflects a broader struggle over whether public symbols commemorate the nation or elevate the individual holding power.
